PETALING JAYA (June 19): Sungai Tua assemblyman Amirudin Shari has been sworn in as the 16th Selangor Chief Minister this morning, replacing Datuk Seri Mohd Azmin Ali who is now serving as the Economic Affairs Minister.

The ceremony took place before Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah at Istana Alam Shah, Klang, at 10.15am today, reported Malaysiakini.

His swearing-in and taking the oath of office was witnessed by the Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, Raja Muda Tengku Amir Shah, Selangor Mufti Mohd Tamyes Abdul Wahid and other state officials.

Amirudin swore to fulfill ten pledges during his term as Chief Minister, which include “defending the sanctity of Islam while respecting other religions; guarding the sovereignty of the royal institution; defending the institution from being tarnished and threatened by any quarter; protecting the special position of the Malays and legitimate rights of other races in accordance with the Federal Constitution and Selangor State Constitution 1959; carrying out duties with integrity and full responsibility; and protecting the position from actions that violate the law”, reported the New Straits Times.

Prior to the ceremony, Amirudin attended a handing over ceremony with Azmin at the palace.

Amirudin, who is also the Sports and Youth Generation Empowerment, Entrepreneurial Development, Traditional Villages and Rural Development Committee chairman, was among two assemblypersons named as likely candidates for the Chief Minister post.

The other candidate was Ijok assemblyman Dr Idris Ahmad.
