PETALING JAYA (June 20): Double-parking at Subang Jaya’s bustling SS15 is still rampant despite a new four-storey car parking complex that opened last year, reported The Star.

Built at a cost of RM12 million, the complex offers 647 parking bays including seven for the disabled.

The complex is next to the former site of the Asia Café food court, the SS15 market, the Majlis Perbandaran Subang Jaya (MPSJ) multi-purpose hall and a host of private college and university campuses.

Councillor Ken Chia said people chose to double-park despite the abundance of parking spots because they want to be close to their destination.

“In front of banks, people would still double-park even though an MSPJ enforcement booth is there.

“They are not worried because the summons given is not linked to the Road Transport Department (JPJ),” he said.

The parking complex operator charges RM1 per hour on weekdays from 7am to 7pm – with fees capped at RM8 per day – and a flat rate of RM2 after 7pm.

On weekends, parking charges are RM2 per entry.

A monthly parking pass costs RM159 but students are charged a cheaper rate at RM127.

RM30 will be charged for lost tickets while the charge to release clamped cars is RM80.

Councillor Pooi Wai Keong said MPSJ had collected RM454,175 in parking fees, monthly passes and lost ticket fines from Sept last year to March this year, a lower amount than previously due to the closure of Asia Café and Taylor’s College’s relocation to its new campus.

He added that the council plans to create more handicapped parking bays in SS15 and introduce family and female driver spots in the parking complex.
