wash hands

KUALA LUMPUR (July 20): Two kindergartens and a nursery in Labuan had to be closed this year due to the disease, Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD), reported Bernama today.

According to the Labuan Health Department, the number of cases there was higher than the 212 cases reported over the corresponding period last year.

The department also said that 23 cases of the disease were recorded from July 7 to 14.

It also advised parents to make sure their children maintain good hygiene such as washing hands with soap and water to stem the spread of HFMD.

Meanwhile, Negeri Sembilan recorded a total of 1,350 cases of HFMD from January to yesterday, Bernama reported State Health, Environment, Cooperatives and Consumerism Committee chairman S. Veerapan saying in a statement today.

He said the number of cases revealed that there had been an increase of 139.8% compared with the same period last year.

"The distribution of HFMD cases by district to date is Seremban (950 cases), Jempol (102), Port Dickson (75), Rembau (73), Kuala Pilah (63), Jelebu (46) and Tampin (41). No national schools in the state were fully closed,” Veerapan said.

He said only two nurseries and one preschool at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Paroi, Seremban, have been closed owing to the disease.

Veerapan also reminded those operating early childhood learning centres, nurseries and kindergartens to maintain hygiene.
