KUALA LUMPUR (July 25): Perak’s district, municipal and city councillors will be sworn in by this week, reported The Star today.

“There will be a total of 312 councillors for all 15 councils. Some will have a maximum of 24 councillors while smaller councils will have between 16 and 20.

“Pakatan [Harapan] will also finalise the names of the representatives from non-governmental organisations (NGOs) soon for the posts,” State Housing, Local Government, Public Transport, Non-Islamic Affairs and New Villages Committee Chairman Paul Yong Choo Kiong told the media on Monday.

The Star reported Yong saying that the Perak government wants the swearing-in ceremonies conducted by this week to allow the councillors to start work.

Yong was reported to have reversed his decision to do away with councillors who are members of NGOs, saying that there are capable people from among them who can serve the people.

He explained that the NGO members who become councillors will have not have links with political parties

“They will have no political backgrounds and will serve the people with their NGO experience,” he told the daily.
