KUALA LUMPUR (July 26): The government will push for greater participation of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the Digital Free Trade Zone (DFTZ).

The zone can be exploited as a platform for these SMEs to market their products overseas, Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo (pictured) told the Dewan Rakyat today, Bernama reported.

“The government will continue implementing initiatives that benefit SMEs. The government will also monitor the performance of SME exports through this platform so that they continue to be viable in the long run,” Gobind said while replying to a question from Mohd Shahar Abdullah (BN-Paya Besar) during the Ministers’ Question Time session.

Gobind also added that cross-border online business would become big in future and SMEs, therefore, should be encouraged to participate in the sector.

The minister also revealed that 3,300 SMEs have joined the platform since the DFTZ was implemented last year.
