PETALING JAYA (July 27): Selangor is on alert level for the hand, food and mouth (HFMD) disease with 9,300 cases recorded from January until last week, state Health, Welfare, Women and Family Empowerment Committee chairman Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud told the media today, Bernama reported.
"The HFMD cases peaked in early May namely between 15th week and 17th week with about 600 cases per week being recorded statewide.
"The number has dropped to about 300 cases per week as of last week, however it is still on alert level," she said.
Dr Siti Mariah also said no kindergarten, childcare centre or school in Selangor had been ordered to close as of yesterday even with the spread of the disease.
In Kuala Lumpur, a class at Sekolah Rendah Taman Tun Dr Ismail 2 here was ordered to close yesterday owing to HFMD.
The 36 students in the class were told to take a 10-day holiday after four pupils were infected with HFMD.
A Kuala Lumpur Federal Territory Education Department official today told Bernama that four HFMD cases were reported among Year Three boys in the school.
