MIRI (August 1): Torrential rains which began at 2am today have resulted in flash floods and a landslide in Miri, forcing the closure of a school and a longhouse which were partly flooded.

Miri Fire and Rescue Station chief Law Poh Kiong, quoted by Bernama, said Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Lepong Ajai in the Bakong district experienced floodwaters at a height of 1.5 metres.

In the Lepong Ajai Longhouse floodwaters rose to a level of one metre in the living area and kitchen.

“A landslide was also reported at the 6th mile of Jalan Miri-Bintulu,” he said to Bernama. Floods had also hit a number of settlements and housing estates across the city.

There are reports of floods affecting Taman Tunku, Kampung Pujut Padang Kerbau and the Sungai Rait National Service Training Camp.

The news wire reported that fire and rescue squads were patrolling low-lying areas to ensure the safety of residents.
