PETALING JAYA (Aug 2): The cabinet has approved a month-long extension for the Selangor state government to negotiate the acquisition of Syarikat Pengeluar Air Selangor Holdings (Splash), reported the New Straits Times.

Economic Affairs Minister and former Selangor Menteri Besar (MB) Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali said negotiations were still ongoing and his successor and current MB Amiruddin Shari had sought another one month from the federal government to wrap up discussions.

During Mohamed Azmin’s tenure, the previous federal administration had agreed to a deadline of July 4.

He was replying to questions over allegations made by Pekan MP and former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak yesterday that Selangor is set to purchase Splash for RM2.7 billion.

Najib had further claimed that the transaction will enrich a “Tan Sri” with alleged close ties to a Pakatan Harapan leader and co-founder of an unnamed political party who held a 30% stake in the water company.

Mohamed Azmin also said the Selangor state government had submitted an independent valuation report on the purchase of the water assets to the former federal government two years ago.

The previous government had also appointed an independent valuer, but did not share the report with the Selangor state government.

He expressed hope that the new federal government would share the valuation report with the state, and added that the price negotiated should be “reasonable and fair to the rakyat”.

There are also pre-conditions to the deal, such as not having high tariffs that could burden consumers.
