PETALING JAYA (Aug 7): There are at least 31 schools in Penang that are currently operating without the Certificate of Completion and Compliance (CCC) – prompting concerns over the safety of children studying in these premises.

So far, 14 primary schools and 17 secondary schools in the state were found to not have the CCC, local government and housing development committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo revealed today.

The schools were built under the Penang Management Consultant (PMC), he said in reply to a question posed by Khaliq Mehtab Mohd Ishaq (Pakatan Harapan – Bertam) during the state legislative assembly sitting today, reported the Malay Mail.

Khaliq Mehtab had asked which agencies were involved in repairing the structural damages in schools.

According to Jagdeep, the state education department said this issue was happening nationwide and he urged the Education Ministry, which is responsible for these school projects, to take the necessary action.

The Public Works Department, Fire and Rescue Department and the local council were not involved in conducting any safety inspections on school buildings before they open, said Khaliq Mehtab.

I am worried because my daughter goes to one of these schools,” he added.

Jagdeep replied that the matter is outside is outside the state government's jurisdiction.

Khaliq Mehtab later explained that he had received complaints over problems related to the SK Kepala Batas building, which included structural defects, cracked floors and a lack of safety measures.

He added that there were seven schools in the district built under the PMC that did not receive the CCC.
