KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 16): The Transport Ministry will build a new ferry terminal next to the existing Kuala Kedah Ferry Terminal to provide comfort to passengers, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said the construction of the new ferry terminal would take at least two years to complete.

“We still retain the new terminal at the existing location but we will make sure that it will not experience sedimentation and floods that occurred at the existing terminal.

“In fact, the construction process will not affect the passengers using the ferry services," he said when replying to a supplementary question from Dr Azman Ismail (PH-Kuala Kedah) during the oral question-answer session.

Dr Azman wanted to know if the ministry would relocate the Kuala Kedah Ferry Terminal to a more strategic location to avoid problems in the future.

Responding to the original question, Loke, who is also Seremban MP, said the ministry had allocated RM208.9 million to implement the reconstruction and upgrades of the Kuala Kedah Ferry Terminal.

He said, the scope of the project was to raise the ground level as well as to upgrade the drainage system.

“Currently, the ministry is in the process of identifying procurement methods and implementing agency for this project, and then we will organise a value management laboratory involving the relevant agencies.

“At the same time, the land procurement process for the project is also being implemented,” he said, adding that the appointment of consultants by open tender was expected to be made in December 2018 and the project to commence in the third quarter of 2019.

Dr Azman, in his original question, wanted to know the ministry’s plans to upgrade and to address the occurrences of high-tide flooding at the Kuala Kedah Ferry Terminal.
