Loke: LRT not the best solution for Penang's transport woes

PETALING JAYA (Sept 6): The light rail transit (LRT) may not be the best solution to ease Penang's traffic issues, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke in a Malay Mail report.

He said studies have shown that the rail system was not the most appropriate choice for the state and his ministry is seeking other modes of public transport.

The Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) has suggested alternatives such as a tram system, said Loke.

He added that the federal government will give its full support in terms of approval for Penang's public transport projects, and the state will now need to choose among the options proposed.

The LRT is part of the Penang Transport Master Plan which includes three highways and an undersea tunnel linking Gurney Drive on the island to Bagan Ajam on the mainland, which will be funded by the reclamation of three islands off the southern coast of Penang island.

The proposed LRT line was to run from George Town to Bayan Lepas.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow welcomed the proposals and said the state would implement the public transport projects if it can get the necessary funds.
