PETALING JAYA (Sept 18): The Melaka government is seeking ways to stop a massive land reclamation project in Klebang following complaints from residents and fishermen, reported The Star.

State Housing, Local Government and Environment Committee chairman Tey Kok Kiew said from a legal standpoint, the government is not able to call off the project easily as the agreement was signed by the former Barisan Nasional-led government.

However, it is looking for clauses in the agreement that could stop work on the reclamation and will review it to see if covered issues such as vehicular emissions, sediment pollution and social environment impact, added Tey.

A further study on the project's environmental impact has been ordered while the state works with the Economic Planning Unit to halt the project.

Currently, land reclamation within three nautical miles of the mainland was not allowed.
