KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 20): The state government of Penang can achieve its target of providing 75,000 affordable homes by 2022.

“The state had pledged (during the 14th General Election) to build 75,000 units of affordable homes in Penang, and we have surpassed the number.

“So far, 28,915 units of low-cost, low medium-cost and various types of affordable housing have been built in Penang since 2008,” State Housing, Town, Country Planning and Local Government Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo (pictured) was reported by The Star as saying recently during an event at the Jen Hotel in Penang.

“A further 22,065 units of such housing are in various stages of being built and 32,212 more units have been approved to be built.

“This brings the grand total to over 80,000 units to date,” he added.

Jagdeep has constantly reminded the public about the success of Penang’s affordable homes programme.

Last month, he said that the state government was confident the total number of affordable homes in Penang could even exceed 100,000 units by 2020.
