KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 6): Planners, architects and engineers have to sell their good ideas to others and make them accept that planning is the only way forward for waste management, Malaysian Institute of Planners president Ihsan Zainal Mokhtar (pictured) told The Star recently.

“It has to be done correctly, strategically and holistically,” the English daily reported Ihsan saying.

“The waste produced in Kuala Lumpur cannot be dumped in Selangor. Singapore manages to survive within its space.

“When Kuala Lumpur has no space for waste disposal, we dump it in Bukit Tagar. Recently, we have plastic from other parts of the world dumped in Malaysia. Why Malaysia? It has got to do with our lack of enforcement for illegal dumping,” he said.

“We need benchmarks and indicators,” he added.

“Have we reduced flood occurrence, carbon footprint and increased our green space? Is our public transport more efficient? We never measure these things. We talk a lot about wanting change but we need to at least look at where we came from and where we are heading,” Ihsan told The Star.

He also revealed that the Urban Design Guideline for Kuala Lumpur City Centre has not been fully utilised.
