PETALING JAYA (Oct 15): Embattled former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is seeking donations from the public to fund his family's legal battles.

In a statement dated Oct 13 on his Facebook page, he said: “Honestly, we are facing financial pressure due to the high legal fees and bail amount.”

“So far, we have received help from close friends and family who have come forward to help but if possible, we would not like to burden them anymore.”

“If it is not too much, those who wish to help may contribute to this fund [Tabung Solidariti 2.0 DSN],” he said.

His daughter Nooryana Najib had also urged members of the public to donate to the fund, which will not only help to cover some of her parents' legal fees – which she has estimated ad over RM7 million – but also defend activists who are allegedly been pressured into silence by the new government, such as an unnamed detractor of Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas) who was purportedly served a legal notice over their criticism of the state's constant water cuts.

“We seek your goodwill to contribute what you can to help our family. Hope we can show our solidarity with the former Prime Minister who has done much for the country” she said in a Facebook posting on the same day.

Najib is facing 32 charges of criminal breach of trust, abuse of power and money laundering involving 1Malaysia Development Bhd while his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor is facing 17 charges of money laundering involving RM7.1 million.

The former premier is out on bail of RM3.5 million, of which he has paid RM1 million, while his wife had just paid up all of her RM2 million bail.
