PETALING JAYA (Oct 17): Due to issues of safety and cleanliness, the 50-year-old hawker centre in Jalan Sena, Klang will be demolished.

The hawker centre was partially razed in a fire in May. The Star reports that the traders have said that Klang Municipal Council (MPK) has issued a notice, asking traders to move out by Dec 31.

Tan Chee Eng, 54, who runs the economy rice stall, was quoted as saying that there were only six trading lots left after the fire, many traders having moved on post-blaze.

“We appeal to the council to allow us to stay longer so we can find a suitable location,” Tan said.

M. Sritharan, 29, who runs a barber shop, was quoted as welcoming the move.

“This environment is not conducive for us to do business. I am looking forward to moving out from here,” said Sritharan. His new venue is just across the road.

The daily reports that according to MPK councillor Tan Jae Kian, who is in the licensing committee, the council’s decision was due to the area being unsafe for occupation, and a fire hazard.

The previous fire is said to have been caused by faulty electrical problem.

“We don’t want another tragedy to happen,” he said.

The daily has previously reported that the Klang landmark hawker centre will not be rebuilt, due to a lack of space.
