Najib arrives at MACC HQ for questioning on 1MDB-IPIC deals

PUTRAJAYA (Oct 24): Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has arrived at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) headquarters here for questioning over 1Malaysia Development Bhd's (1MDB) dealings with International Petroleum Investment Company (IPIC).

Najib and former Treasury secretary-general Tan Sri Dr Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah were summoned by the MACC to be at the headquarters at 2pm.

Najib, clad in his trademark blue suit, arrived at 1.55pm. At press time, Mohd Irwan Serigar had not arrived at the premises.

Bernama reported yesterday that the duo is expected to be charged on Thursday, quoting a source from the MACC.

Media reports said Najib will face six charges in relation to the 1MDB-IPIC matter, whereas it is unclear whether Mohd Irwan Serigar will be jointly charged with the former premier.

Najib was the chairman of 1MDB's board of advisers. Mohd Irwan Serigar, on the other hand, also served as 1MDB chairman between May 2017 and May this year.

According to Malaysiakini, investigations into the matter saw progress following information obtained from a person with the title 'Datuk' who was appointed by Najib as an intermediary between the two companies.

Today would be the ninth time that Najib has been summoned by the MACC to have his statement taken. It is Mohd Irwan Serigar's first session with the anti-graft agency on matters related to 1MDB.

Najib is currently facing 32 charges at the Malaysian courts over 1MDB-related funds, including RM2.3 billion allegedly sourced from the organisation into his own personal account and RM42 million from 1MDB's former unit SRC International Sdn Bhd. — theedgemarkets.com
