KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 14): Klang Valley's second mass rapid transit line (MRT2) is more than 37% complete, and is on track for full completion by July 2021.

The project, also known as the Sungai Buloh-Serdang-Putrajaya (SSP) line, is currently ahead of schedule as the contractors are keen to complete the work early, said Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp).

Its director for electrical and mechanical system works for MRT2, Abdul Hamid Abdillah, added however that the group prefers to stick to the construction programme as the project also involves processes such as testing, trial run and proper commissioning.

"We are exactly 37% (complete) as at the end of October. But now that we are coming to the middle of November it is more than 37% progress," Abdul Hamid said at a press conference to announce the closure of three MRT1 stations to facilitate system migration works on Nov 17 and 18.

The migration works from MRT1 to MRT2 will be carried out in 23 stages to minimise disruption, said Abdul Hamid, adding that the exercise is set to be completed by July 2021.

"If we have one migration work, we have to stop the operations for a very long time to cater for the construction. That is why we do in 23 stages... with minimum impact to the operations," he said.

The next closure for migration works would be in February 2019, he said.

The MRT2 will serve a corridor with a population of two million people stretching from Sungai Buloh to Serdang and Putrajaya.

It will have a total length of 52.2km, consisting of 38.7km of elevated tracks and 13.5km of underground tunnels. theedgemarkets.com
