PETALING JAYA (Jan 10): Here's something you don't get to see every day – Johor's Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar driving Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to the Senai International Airport in a first-generation Proton Saga.

The blue Proton Saga bearing the number plate “Proton 1” was gifted to the current Sultan's late father Sultan Iskandar in 1985, when he was the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, while Mahathir was four years into his first tenure as Prime Minister, reported The Star.

The nonagenarian had an audience with Sultan Ibrahim at the Istana Bukit Serene in Johor's capital Johor Baru at 4pm today.

This is the first time Mahathir met the Sultan since the former took office in May last year as PM after the Pakatan Harapan coalition swept into power.

Many Malaysians identify the iconic Proton Saga as the first national car.

Its marque Proton was founded by Mahathir in 1983 with the aim of enhancing Malaysian industry.

The daily quoted him as saying that "I just want to see him, that is all," when asked about his meeting with the Johor ruler.
