MIRI (Jan 15): The Sarawak state government has launched its own low-cost housing development initiatives, previously under the jurisdiction of the Federal Government.

The Star reports that the state government includes initiatives such as building low-cost houses costing only RM90,000 to RM150,000 each.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg launched the state-level initiatives yesterday, dubbed Initiative Team Abang Jo, in a ceremony in Miri city.

Abang Johari was quoted as saying that Sarawak would venture into its own low-cost housing schemes as those built by the Federal Government were too costly.

“The affordable houses built by the Federal Government under the national housing policy costs about RM300,000 per unit and that is too costly for many people in Sarawak.

“The state government has decided that we must initiate our own low-cost housing projects that are truly affordable for ordinary people.

“We will start pilot projects this year in five locations - Kuching (two projects), Miri, Sibu and Bintulu.

“For this year, we target to build at least 2,000 units and each unit will be priced at RM90,000 to RM150,000 only,” he said.

The daily reports that those eligible for the units are those earning a household income of RM800 to RM2,500 per month.

A total of RM6.24bil was allocated, and the key initiatives include the implementation of 324 grassroots projects aimed at socio-economic impact inducement of the rakyat.
