KUALA LUMPUR (March 9): Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman (TAR) will only be closed to private vehicles during weekends, reported the New Straits Times (NST).

A source told NST the decision was made yesterday after a meeting between the Federal Territories Ministry, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and traders at Jalan TAR.

“We will start on a trial basis on weekends. If the response is positive, we will take it from there. The traders have agreed to this.

“Buses, taxis and ambulances will be allowed through,” the source told the daily.

The source said the trial run to convert the “affected stretch” along Jalan TAR into a pedestrian mall must be gazetted by the Attorney General.

But NST could not confirm with the source whether the trial run would start “on March 15 (Friday), or on March 16 which would be the start of the weekend”.

Federal Territories Minister Khalid Abdul Samad said yesterday that details on the partial closure of Jalan TAR will be made known by March 12 (Tuesday).

A second engagement session with the stakeholders had been held at Menara DBKL 1, from which a consensus on how the new traffic plan would be executed had been reached.

“About eight representatives from the Batu Road Retailers Association (Barra) and the Masjid India Business Association (Miba) gave their ideas and we want to thank them for it,” Khalid said.

“Apart from an online survey by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), we also surveyed on the ground.

“There will be changes with respect to the Ramadan bazaar and night market, among others. Hopefully all the changes will be for the better,” he said.
