KUALA LUMPUR (April 3): Clearing works for the East Klang Valley Expressway (EKVE) have resulted in mud flowing into 25 homes in Sierra Ukay, Ukay Perdana in Ampang during heavy rain on Sunday night, The Star reported yesterday.

Several houses and vehicles were damaged when the strong mud floods hit the housing estate.

While visiting the site on Sunday, Ampang lawmaker Zuraida Kamaruddin, who is also Minister of Housing and Local Government, has “instructed” project concessionaire Ahmad Zaki Resources Bhd (AZRB) to carry out “mitigation work” immediately, reported the daily.

“I have told them to look into preventing silt from coming down the hill as well as clearing the silt from the drains.

“An emergency response team will also be on standby to mobilise resources if needed,” she said.

Zuraida, explained that “mud and debris from the development site flowed into the drains and clogged a culvert behind the houses”.

The culvert was soon filled with debris and silt – “causing the water to overflow onto the roads and into the houses”.

“The culvert was quite deep, about 3m, and it was filled up. They may have to look into deepening or widening it if needed,” she told the daily.

Zuraida also asked AZRB to expedite damage claims stemming from the mud flood.

She said “developers should take greater precautionary measures.

Zuraida said developers should take more precautionary measures as similar incidents in the Ampang area have been caused by the highway construction.
