PETALING JAYA (April 30): The revamped Skim Mesra Usia Emas (SMUE) scheme will offer Selangor residents aged 60 and above a once-a-year RM100 shopping voucher for festive seasons.

This new scheme, to begin in October, is to replace the old one ending today, which has been paying RM2,500 to the next-of-kin of the state’s residents aged 60 and above for funeral expenses.

Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari said the new scheme, estimated to cost the state RM20 million annually, “will allow senior citizens to enjoy benefits while they are still living”, reported MalaysiaKini today.

"The state government wants senior citizens to appreciate and enjoy the state's revenue while they are still alive," Amirudin was quoted saying four days ago.

The Selangor Children's Heritage Foundation (Yawas) general manager Gan Pei Nei has urged those who qualify, estimated to number 200,000, to sign up for the benefit.

She said the old scheme has only benefitted 103,320 next-of-kins since 2008.

Gan said further enquiries can be obtained from Yawas at 03-5481 8800.

On the temporarily suspended Kasih Ibu Smart Selangor (Kiss) and Skim Peduli Sihat (SPS) programmes, the Selangor government is tweaking them as it updates its database.
