GEORGE TOWN (June 21): The proposed Light Rail Transit (LRT) alignment will not affect the Masjid Jamek and its burial grounds in Sungai Nibong Besar, Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow ensured today, reported The Star.

"The state government will always respect Islamic guidelines and the decision of the state fatwa council before making any decision on the proposed mosque site.

"The state will abide with the decision and conditions imposed by the Federal Government through the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) regarding rail schemes,” Chow told the media at Komtar today.

"As such, the state urges the people not to be influenced by such unsubstantiated reports which have gone viral, as we believe in building an inclusive and smart state under mission Penang 2030," the daily reported him saying.
