PETALING JAYA (Oct 31): The key figure in the 1Malaysia Development Bhd scandal Low Taek Jho, better known as Jho Low, is currently in the United Arab Emirates and and has obtained asylum in another country on the basis of human rights and political persecution, legal sources told The Malaysian Insight (TMI).

According to a TMI report, Low’s spokesperson said Low was in the UAE and had been travelling regularly between the Middle East and Europe since June.

The spokesperson added that Low was spending time in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and other Middle East countries where he has “close relations with royal families”.

The Singapore Straits Times said the fugitive businessman was offered asylum last August under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and European Convention on Human Rights.

TMI quoted a legal source saying Low was offered asylum due to Malaysia’s “purported political action and human rights violations” against him.
