MPAJ raids 25 premises for not paying assessment tax

KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 1): Failure to settle outstanding assesment tax has led to 25 premises being raided by the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ).
 
Their electrical items were also seized to be auctioned off to cover the outstanding amount owed to the council, reported The Star today.

The defaulters consist of both residential and commercial units who have not paid heed to the assessment bills and warrants issued to them, said MPAJ president Datuk Abdul Hamid Hussain.
 
“The standard operating procedure is to issue them a warrant if they fail to pay their assessment tax. If they continue to ignore the notices issued, we will seize their moveable objects.

“To-date, we have auctioned off the objects for RM6,000, but that alone could not cover their arrears,” he revealed. 

Out of 5,933 assessment bills issued from January to September, 3,598 have remained outstanding. In addition to the unpaid warrants, the arrears total more than RM14 million this year. Since 2017, the defaulted payments have amounted to RM44,216,238.

Legal action could be taken against property owners if the outstanding bill exceeded RM10,000, warned Abdul Hamid, adding that MPAJ had conducted 10 raids this year.

“Another problem we face is vacant properties that defaulted on their payment. We could not seize any item from them during the operations.

“We will issue a letter of demand to the property owners,” he stated in a press conference after MPAJ’s full board meeting.
