PETALING JAYA (Dec 6): UCSI University student Tien Jun Xiang and City University Malaysia student Sharifah Mohamad have won the Asia Young Designer Awards 2019 (AYDA) in Malaysia. They will represent the country to vie for the Asia Young Designer of the Year Awards 2019/20 which will be held at the Asia Young Designers Summit 2019/20 in Vietnam from March 11 to 14, 2020.

Tien and Sharifah were named Gold Winner in the Architecture and Interior Design categories respectively. They took home a cash prize worth RM5,000 each.

AYDA 2019 was organised by Nippon Paint Malaysia Group in partnership with IJM Land Bhd.

Now in its 12th year, AYDA’s theme this year – Forward: A Sustainable Future – encourages the next generations of architects and interior designers to break the boundaries of current design concepts by adding functional and social sustainability elements into their creations, with an aim to connect with the community.

“The goal of this year’s theme focuses on functional and sustainable designs that connect with the community,” Nippon Paint Malaysia group general manager of Gladys Goh said at the awards ceremony yesterday.

Meanwhile, senior general manager of Bandar Rimbayu at IJM Land Chai Kian Soon said: “As a progressive developer, we pride ourselves in innovative design, value-driven ideas, master planning and sustainability capabilities to enhance communities and society. In our pledge to help shape the future of our industry, we seek to empower the new generation of design talents, bonding creative education with the industry”.

Tien’s winning idea in the Architecture category was called Revival of Hope depicting the revival of a burnt church by turning it into an ecologically-safe architecture that combines both modern and historical designs. In the Interior Design category, Sharifah’s "Ladang" was envisioned as a green urban agriculture organic farm and market that targets to address obesity in Malaysia.

Sarly Adre Sarkum was the chief judge of the Architecture category, while Lai Siew Hong was the chief judge of the Interior Design category.
