BEAUFORT (Jan 18): Barisan Nasional (BN) retained the Kimanis parliamentary seat after winning the by-election today with a 2,029-vote majority.

Its candidate, Datuk Mohamad Alamin, 48, garnered 12,706 votes, while his contender Datuk Karim Bujang, 67, from Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) secured 10,677 votes.

The result of the by-election was announced by Kimanis by-election returning officer Jupari@Jupry Etok,  who is also Beaufort District Officer, at the vote tallying centre at Dewan Datuk Seri Panglima Hj Mohd Dun Banir here, at 9.30 pm.

The by-election was necessitated by the Election Court’s nullification on Aug 16, 2019, of former MP Datuk Seri Anifah Aman’s win in Kimanis in the 14th General Election (GE14) in May 2018.

The polling went smoothly from 7.30 am to 5 pm without incidents.
