KUALA LUMPUR (March 27): The government will be focusing on domestic investment activities that have high multiplier effects and can create jobs, said Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin in a speech today.

These include small projects, infrastructure development, and rehabilitation of facilities which the government has budgeted RM3.1 billion for their implementation.

The government has identified jobs that will benefit contractors classified in the G1 to G4 categories.

A total RM2 billion has been allocated for the projects which will be implemented starting in April.

They include improving road conditions, upgrading schools in Sabah and Sarawak that are in bad condition, disinfecting places of worship and police stations, as well as upgrading tourism facilities.

In addition, RM600 million is allocated for infrastructure projects in the Federal Land Development Authority (FELDA) areas, RM350 million to restore dilapidated schools in Sabah and Sarawak, and RM150 million to refurbish housing for the poor.

The government will also continue the implementation of all projects allocated in the Budget 2020 including the Mass Rapid Transit Line 2 (MRT2), East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) and the National Fiberisation and Connectivity Plan (NFCP).

As of March 11, overall construction of the MRT2, otherwise known as the Sungai Buloh-Serdang-Putrajaya (SSP Line), is over 70% completed.

The line is scheduled to begin phase one operations by the middle of 2021, with the rest of the line to follow by 2022.

Meanwhile, the ECRL rail project, which will link Port Klang, Selangor and Kota Bharu, Kelantan has achieved 15% completion since February.
