KUALA LUMPUR (March 27): Several measures were announced by the government that were targeted at civil servants, public sector contract workers, as well as pensioners.

Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced a one-off RM500 financial assistance for more than 1.5 million civil servants grade 56 and below, including contract workers, which will be paid in April.

Retired civil servants are also entitled to a one-off assistance of RM500, which will also be disbursed in April.

For service contractors, such as those providing sanitation and food supply services at schools, higher education institutions, public training institutions and other agencies, the government has decided to cover the salary of the contractors’ staff members.

Their wages will be covered throughout the duration of the Movement Control Order (MCO), regardless of whether the staff members are working during this period or not.

The government has also agreed to extend the contracts of these service providers by a month, as a trade-off for the MCO period.
