PETALING JAYA (April 1): While some may be getting bored and struggling to find things to do while staying at home during the COVID-19 Movement Control Order (MCO) period in the country, there are also those who are hard at work at home, doing their bit to help the medical frontliners.

Using their time productively, several families in Section 17, Petaling Jaya have volunteered to hand make face shields and protective headgears for the frontliners with guidance from the medical fraternity. One of them is the Sze family who is making 650 face shields and 350 protective head gear with more to come.

A family member, Joanna Sze said they are so blessed to be able to be with family during this time, and even more blessed to have an opportunity to play a small part in supporting the medical frontliners in this fight against the COVID-19 outbreak.

“In the worst of times, Malaysians have always shown great resilience, strength and unity, and we see this spirit again in the midst of the challenges we face today,” Sze told EdgeProp.my

These volunteers are part of a supply chain. They got in touch with a hospice that coordinates and supplies the protective gear to different government hospitals upon request.

The materials used are provided by different donors while they need to follow specific instructions on the items that they need to make.

Meanwhile, another movement called Support Doctors founded by Pearly Teh aims to support the frontliners by coordinating and connecting with doctors and hospitals on their immediate urgent needs.

“Even with the lock down at home, with the power of networking and the agility within our group, we are able to work fast and efficiently to source for both funds and equipment. We negotiate, purchase and deliver to the doctor or hospital’s doorsteps, whatever they need, within 48 hours. At times, we also coordinate with other groups of sponsors in directing them to hospitals in need of certain equipment. It's amazing what people power and their big hearts can do!” Teh exclaimed.

The team which is made up of people from all walks of life, from mothers to professionals believes that the medical frontliners need to focus on saving lives and not worry about not having the right equipment to do that.

“They need to be healthy to do their jobs. Our hope is Malaysians who want to help, do not make use of this moment for personal profit.”
