KUALA LUMPUR (April 2): The Building Materials Distributors Association of Malaysia (BMDAM) hopes the government will consider instituting a direct payment system for building materials suppliers who are affected by COVID-19 and the Movement Control Order to ease their cash flow.
Its president, Bill Lee said the industry has been severely impacted from delays in payment from both the public and private sectors.
“The direct payment for public sector projects can help assist in cushioning some of this burden,” he said in a statement today.
Lee applauded the recently unveiled Prihatin Rakyat Economic Stimulus Package that places priority on the rakyat.
However, BMDAM said consideration will be given in view of the severe difficulties in the industry caused by delays in payments.
“The industry has been experiencing rightsizing in the past year and if there is no improvements soon, we may see some of them close down due to short fall in collection to maintain the business operation.
“Sustainability for our business very much depends on the collection from the construction industry,” he said.
