KUALA LUMPUR (April 8): The number of Covid-19 recoveries in Malaysia doubled to 166 today from 80 yesterday, bringing the total number of discharges to 1,487 or 36.1% of total cases.

This is the second time the number of daily recoveries exceeded the number of new cases, which totaled 156 today. The tally of confirmed Covid-19 cases in the country now stands at 4,119.

Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah also updated that there are now 76 patients under intensive care units (ICU) with 45 of them requiring respiratory assistance.

"This is a decrease compared to yesterday," he said at his daily news briefing on the Covid-19 situation in the country.

Yesterday, it was reported that there were 92 patients in ICU, 50 of whom required respiratory assistance.

Two new deaths were reported today, raising the death toll due to the coronavirus outbreak to 65 in Malaysia.

The first death involved a 58-year-old female, who had a history of diabetes and hypertension. She started receiving treatment in Hospital Tuanku Ja'afar in Seremban from March 30 until she passed away yesterday at 3.20pm.

The second reported death was a 69-year-old Pakistani national male with a history of diabetes. He was one of the attendees of the Tabligh assembly at the Sri Petaling mosque.

"The Ministry of Health extends our condolences to the families of the deceased," Noor Hisham said.
