KUALA LUMPUR (April 21): The Ministry of Health announced today that Malaysia’s daily new cases rose to 57, which is higher than the number of recoveries at 54 cases.

This is the sixth time Malaysia reported daily infections in the double digits.

The country's current total cases increased slightly to 5,482.

Meanwhile, the total number of cured cases stands at 3,349 as of noon today, representing a recovery rate of 61.1%.

This means the number of active cases is now 2,041, with patients already isolated and given treatment.

Of the 57 new cases, 18 were imported cases from Malaysians who just returned from overseas, while the remaining 39 were from local Covid-19 transmission, said health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a statement.

To date, 43 positive cases are being treated in the intensive care unit, with 27 of them needing respiratory assistance.

The death toll continues to climb to 92 cases after three more deaths were reported, representing a mortality rate of 1.68%.

The three who succumbed to Covid-19 were a 72-year-old woman, a 69-year-old man and a 92-year-old man.

The three of them had several chronic illnesses such as diabetes, high blood pressure, kidney failure and dementia.

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases around the world has soared to 2.5 million with 171,381 deaths recorded.

Malaysia has the fourth-highest number of Covid-19 infections in Southeast Asia.

Singapore is the worst hit in the region, with 9,125 cases, followed by Indonesia (7,135) and the Philippines (6,599).
