KUALA LUMPUR (April 27): Singapore now has Asia’s highest number of Covid-19 cases after China and India, Bloomberg reported yesterday.

Even though it has the continent’s smallest populations, it has been reported that the city state has recorded infections exceeding 13,000, surpassing Japan, with only China and India having more cases in Asia.

The vast majority of infections are among migrant workers living in packed conditions in dormitories, “presenting a major setback to Singapore’s early success in containing the spread of the virus”, wrote Bloomberg.

Singapore citizens and permanent residents made up just 15 of the new cases, the government said in a statement yesterday.

However, even though the number of positive cases in Singapore has gone, it also has one of the lowest death rates from Covid-19, with just 12 fatalities.

Meanwhile, the island republic’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said yesterday that Singapore urgently needs a solution to house the large numbers of positive cases to prevent hospitals from getting swamped.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has forced us to improvise and come up with innovative, workable solutions on the ground.

“It's a constant trial and error, to find the best way to help the most people in the shortest time,” Lee said in a Facebook posting, reported Bernama.
