KUALA LUMPUR (May 18): Many politicians on both sides of the political divide made their way to a heavily guarded (pictured) Parliamentary session this morning amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
This is the first time that the august house is convening since the political upheaval in February which saw the Perikatan Nasional coalition, comprising Bersatu, BN, Umno and PAS, oust the ruling Pakatan Harapan government in what many called a “backdoor coup”.
This particular parliamentary sitting is different as no media outlets, save for official media, are allowed to cover proceedings from inside the Dewan Rakyat due to concerns about the spread of the coronavirus that causes Covid-19.
Members of the media had gathered outside the heavily policed parliament entrance as early as 8am.
The police had also asked the media to mind their social distancing, warning that those who encroached onto the road would be arrested.
Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was seen waving to the media as his motorcade made its way into parliament earlier this morning.
Many other Parliamentarians had trickled in throughout the morning.
The Dewan Rakyat expects to see a full house of 222 MPs and for the first time, they are expected to observe social distancing.
The one-day Parliament session today will only see the opening address of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Ahmad Shah.
