Covid-19: Malaysia’s new daily cases drop to 10 today, its lowest since MCO started

KUALA LUMPUR (May 28): Malaysia recorded just 10 new Covid-19 infections as of noon today, its lowest daily tally since the country imposed the nationwide movement control order (MCO) in mid-March.

This brings the country’s total recorded cases to 7,629, said health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in his daily media briefing today.

The 10 new cases today were all local transmissions, with five of them involving non-Malaysians. 

Yesterday, 15 new infections were reported, the second lowest since the MCO was imposed.

The number of active cases, meanwhile, dropped to 1,345 as the Ministry of Health recorded 86 more recoveries today.

This brings the number of total recoveries to 6,169, representing 80.9% of all cases.

So far, eight patients are being treated in intensive care with four needing ventilators to breathe.

The death toll remains at 115, with no new additions for the sixth consecutive day, translating into a 1.51% mortality rate.

Noor Hisham pointed out that from May 4 — which was the start of the conditional movement control order (CMCO) enforcement — until yesterday, 1,189 new Covid-19 cases were detected.

Of this number, migrants accounted for 990 or 77.3% of infections, including 383 detainees at the Bukit Jalil, Semenyih and Sepang immigration depot centres.

“Since the start of the CMCO, the Covid-19 spread among the local community has reduced from week to week. This could not be achieved without the cooperation and compliance of the public to the advice, recommendation and standard operating procedures by the government, as well as enforcement by government agencies.

“If these efforts are continued by all with a sense of social responsibility, surely we can break the chain of infection by the Covid-19 virus in Malaysia,” he said.
