Sibu man fined RM5,000 for breaking home quarantine to eat noodles

SIBU (June 4): A 27-year-old man has been fined RM5,000 in default five months jail after he pleaded guilty in the Magistrate’s Court here today for violating a home quarantine order to go out for a bowl of ‘kampua’ noodles, reported the Borneo Post Online.

Site supervisor Jeffery Jambo Dana was charged under Section 22(b) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988, punishable under Section 24(a) of the same act which carries an imprisonment term not exceeding two years or to a fine or to both upon conviction, said the report.

Jeffery, who lives at the Taman Bandar Sibu Jaya People’s Housing Project, had violated a home quarantine order on May 25, 9.30am, at a coffee shop at Sibu Jaya to enjoy the local delicacy of kampua noodles. He also left “evidence” of his deed when he uploaded pictures of him having the noodles on Facebook.

Jeffery, who was unrepresented, pleaded for leniency an added that he felt “remorseful for violating the order, and that he had to take care of his siblings, a child and his parents”, reported the news portal.
