Rapid Transit System negotiations to be finalised this week — Transport Minister

KUALA LUMPUR (July 15): The bilateral negotiations for the Rapid Transit System (RTS) linking Johor Bahru and Singapore will be concluded this week, according to Transport Minister Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong (pictured).

He hopes the outstanding issues can be resolved this week, adding that the parties are going through some "legal scrubbing".

"We are hoping for an amicable solution to both issues to be found within this week. We will finalise it and table it to the Cabinet next week. We will definitely sign the agreement by the end of the month," he said at a press conference in Parliament today.

Asked if there will be any delay, given that Singapore is currently forming its cabinet, Wee said it is not a concern as "Singapore will form their cabinet very soon".

Meanwhile, on the two issues to be resolved relating to the project, he declined to elaborate.

"These two issues — hopefully we'll be able to resolve them. We are not resolving them through the media and we need to respect the bilateral negotiations. We will reach a consensus on this," he said.

Earlier this week, Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Ir Hasni Mohammad reportedly said works for the RTS will begin in November.

He said the project is essential for Johoreans working in Singapore and to ease traffic congestion on the Johor Causeway.
