PETALING JAYA (July 27): Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ)’s decision on cutting trees for road widening works at Jalan University has sparked outrage of the residents who are staying nearby, according to a report by The Star.

The residents in Section 16 have lodged complaints to the Landscape Department and the Bukit Gasing state assemblyman Rajiv Rishyakaran’s office.

The report said MBPJ has stopped the tree-felling works after chopping down 26 trees.

Meanwhile, some of the residents in Section 17 have initiated a petition last Friday, over concerns on environmental issues and call for a stop on tree-cutting works.

One of the residents who initiated the petition on Change.org said that these trees, which are as old as 50 years old, provide shade and respite from the heat for pedestrians and bicycle commuters and are “world class aesthetic beauty in itself”.

“They are a provider for peace and tranquility, a stress reliever and a beauty to the eye every-time we use the road at Jalan University on my way home to Section 17, Petaling Jaya,” said the resident on the global petition platform.

To-date, 938 people have signed the petition and urged the local authority to stop the tree-felling works.
