KUALA LUMPUR (July 30): Umno will be leaving the informal Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition, said its president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (pictured).

In a press statement, he said the party will instead strengthen its Muafakat Nasional (MN) pact with PAS, and the other component parties of Barisan Nasional (BN).

"Support for the Perikatan Nasional government is only based on support of Umno and BN members of Parliament and state assemblypersons in the formation of the federal government and certain states," he said.

He added that that Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has met with BN lawmakers at the Parliament yesterday afternoon and has expressed PPBM's (Bersatu) desire to join MN.

Ahmad Zahid added that Bersatu's wish to join the coalition will be discussed with PAS.

"The central committee of MN have earlier decided for Umno and PAS to give priority to strengthen MN.

"I will let the central committee consider PPBM's request, if it is able to strengthen MN further in the interest of the people and nation," he said.

Currently, MN collectively holds 58 seats in Parliament. With the entry of Bersatu, its total seats will rise to 88.

It is unclear at this point if Bersatu will be leaving PN, which also comprises PAS, GPS, STAR, PBS and PBRS.
