KUALA LUMPUR (July 30): Malaysia’s daily new Covid-19 cases fell to eight — from 13 reported yesterday — of which seven involved locals, according to the Ministry of Health (MoH).

However, the number of active cases in the country — patients who are isolated and given treatment — continued to climb for the second consecutive week since July 17. The Ministry announced 223 active cases today, more than double the figure of 92 two weeks ago.

“Three cases are being treated in intensive care units and one case is on breathing support," said Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah at a media briefing today.

Of the eight new cases, five were local transmissions involving five Malaysians, while three imported cases involved two Malaysians and one foreigner who was allowed to enter the country.

This means no local transmissions were found among foreigners.

“The five local transmissions involving Malaysians were found in Kuala Lumpur (one case found through screening in a medical centre) and one case in Johor from pre-surgery screening in Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital.

“Three cases found in Sabah where one case was from reference screening to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, one from screening in Queen Elizabeth Hospital while the other was from pre-surgery screening in Tawau Hospital,” said Noor Hisham.

As for the three imported cases, one case was found from those who had returned from Kazakhstan, Indonesia (one), and the Philippines (one).

On recoveries, according to Noor Hisham, there were five cases today, bringing the total recovered patients to 8,617, which represents 96.1% of overall cases.

"No death was reported today and the number of fatalities in the country stands at 124 (1.38% of the total cases), while the number of cumulative cases in the country increased to 8,964.

As the Muslims will be celebrating Hari Raya Aidiladha tomorrow, Noor Hisham reminded the public to avoid mass gatherings and follow the standard operating procedures (SOP) during the celebration.

Besides, Noor Hisham reminded Malaysians to always wear face masks in crowded and confined spaces, if social distancing is hard to practice.
