Three new mutated Covid-19 strains detected in South Korea

SEOUL (August 11): South Korea’s public health authorities have discovered three new mutated genome sequences of the novel coronavirus among imported cases-- two from Pakistan and one from Uzbekistan, reported Yonhap News Agency.

The report said the genetic mutations were detected in the virus’ “spike protein”, which is known to help Covid-19 penetrate into human cells. 

The new mutations are different from 78,810 viral genome sequences registered at the GISAID database - a global science and primary source for genomic data of influenza viruses and novel coronavirus.

As of August 11, 2020, South Korea recorded 14,660 confirmed Covid-19 cases, and the number of deaths totaled 305.
