MoH: Malaysia's new Covid-19 cases rise to 20, pushing active cases near 200-mark

KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 14): New Covid-19 cases in Malaysia rose slightly to 20 from 15 reported yesterday, pushing the number of active cases close to the 200-mark.

Active cases climbed for five consecutive days from 166 reported on Monday (Aug 10), to 196 today, as total cases increased to 9,149.

However, the death toll stayed at 125 for the second straight week, as no new Covid-19 related deaths were reported by the Ministry of Health (MoH) today.

Nonetheless, daily recoveries are lower than new cases reported today with only seven patients recovering from the disease.

Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said total recoveries nationwide now stand at 8,828 or 96.5% of total cases.

Meanwhile, the number of Covid-19 patients that are being treated in intensive care unit has increased to four, with one of them needing breathing assistance.

Of the 20 new cases, 13 were local transmissions while the remaining seven cases were imported, according to Noor Hisham’s statement.

Noor Hisham said the 13 locally-transmitted cases all involved Malaysians, with 12 detected in Kedah and one in Penang.

In Kedah, 10 cases were found in the Tawar cluster, one in the newly-discovered Muda cluster, while the other involved a Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) patient.

Meanwhile, the single case in Penang is also part of the Tawar cluster. She had previously visited two other patients who were part of the cluster at a private hospital in Penang.

On the other hand, the seven imported cases involve six Malaysians and one foreigner, who were infected abroad.

“The seven imported cases were [from] Lebanon (three cases were found in Kuala Lumpur), Indonesia (one case was found in Selangor), France (one case was detected in Selangor), Yemen (one case was in Sarawak), and Taiwan (one case in Kuala Lumpur),” said Noor Hisham.
