KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 28): The Goldman Sachs Group has made the US$2.5 billion (RM10.4 billion) it pledged to Putrajaya over allegations of misconduct in the 1MDB scandal, Bloomberg reported today.
The report, based on statements of “a person familiar with the matter” but did not want to be named, also revealed that the government received the funds in its escrow account yesterday (Aug 27).
Putrajaya has plans to use the funds received to “help repay 1MDB's outstanding debt, including US$3.5 billion of bonds due in 2022 and 2023 (currently held under the Finance Ministry), said the same person.
Bloomberg also wrote that the “money comes at an opportune time for Malaysia, which is seeking funding to shore up an economy battered by the [Covid-19] pandemic”.
