PETALING JAYA (Aug 31): The Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) urged the government to take actions on the employers who failed to improve the living conditions of migrant workers in all sectors, reported Malay Mail.
MTUC secretary general J.Solomon said some migrant workers are still staying in cramped and shabby conditions at the worksites or rented houses.
Despite three months grace period has been given to the employers to comply with the amended Workers; Minimum Standards of Housing and Amenities Act 1990, which ends today, there are no significant improvements.
In some cases, as many as 15 to 20 workers are sharing a three-bedroom apartment of less than 1,000 sq ft with one or two washrooms, according to the report.
He said the bad living conditions is a clear violation of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) conventions, which has been used as a benchmark for international trade dealings.
