KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 10): Malaysia’s Covid-19 cases breached the 15,000 mark today to reach 15,096 after 374 new infections were reported as of noon today.

There were three new Covid-19 related deaths in Sabah, raising the country’s death toll to 155 or 1.03% of total cases, said health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

They comprised a 61-year-old man with a history of diabetes and ocular tuberculosis at Tawau Hospital, a 54-year-old woman suffering from diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu, and a 51-year-old man with diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease at Semporna Hospital.

All but two of the new infections comprised local transmissions, with Sabah once again accounting for the bulk with 277 cases.

Selangor saw a spike in new cases to 44, while Kedah registered 27 cases.

Other states and territories reporting new cases are Sarawak (nine), Kuala Lumpur (six), Penang (three), Johor (two), Perak (two), Labuan (two), Melaka (one) and Putrajaya (one).

Dr Noor Hisham said the number of Covid-19 patients discharged in the 24 hours as of noon today was 73, while total active cases climbed to a new high of 4,161, from 3,863 yesterday.

The recovery tally now stands at 10,780 or 71.4% of overall cases, he said in a televised media briefing.

The two imported cases today involved a Malaysian and a foreigner who had returned from the Philippines.

Dr Noor Hisham said 17 of the new cases had a history of visiting Sabah, which brings the total number of such cases since Sept 20 to 341 cases.

Six new clusters of infections were reported today, namely the Highway cluster (23 positive cases) in Kota Belud, Sabah; Bah Manggis cluster (eight positive cases) in Tawau, Sabah and Kuala Langat, Selangor; Utama cluster (10 positive cases) in Gombak and Petaling, Selangor; Tasik cluster (10 positive cases) in Miri, Sarawak, in Petaling, Hulu Langat and Klang, Selangor; Simera cluster (eight positive cases) in Terengganu; as well as Putra cluster (five positive cases) in Bintulu, Sarawak.
