KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 16): The Perak authorities have declared Taiping a Covid-19 red zone as 77 cases were detected in the Larut Matang Selama district over the last two weeks.

In a FMT report based on a Facebook posting by the Perak Health Department, the state saw 52 new cases yesterday, with 48 originating from Taiping.

All the 48 Taiping cases involved local detainees who underwent close contact screenings on Oct 3 after travelling from Alor Setar prison on Sept 27 and 28, and had tested negative back then.

“On Oct 13, samples for a second reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test were taken. The results from the second test on Oct 14 came out positive,” stated the department

All 48 cases did not leave the detention centre in the last 14 days, reported the news portal

The remaining cases involved two Malaysians from Hilir Perak and two from Hulu Perak who all had contact with a positive case.

An area becomes a red zone when it has more than 40 positive cases.
