KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 22): Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah clarified that Muslim women wearing “niqab”, or veils covering the face called “purdah”, must still wear face masks to stem the Covid-19 pandemic, Malay Mail reported today.

“We are all required to wear a face mask when in public since Aug 1. There are two types of masks, the medical and non-medical mask,” he said during his daily media briefing today.

“The three-ply mask is used by medical officers and the sick with chronic diseases. This is the recommended mask for them to wear.

“As for those who are not infected or sick, they can wear the non-medical masks in public but they must be in accordance with the criteria set by WHO which states that a mask must have at least three layers,” the news portal reported Dr Noor Hisham saying.

He also explained that face masks must be worn inside the niqab.
