PETALING JAYA (Oct 23): There has been speculation since early today about the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government will very soon declare a state of emergency in Malaysia to combat the daily spike of Covid-19 infections.

A Malay Mail report stated that the Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin (pictured) “rushed out of Putrajaya to Kuantan, Pahang” after chairing this morning’s special Cabinet meeting to seek an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong over the matter.

The Star reported that “a state of emergency is expected to be announced as early as Friday (Oct 23) evening to “step up the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic” and to “put a stop to political squabbles”.

Meanwhile, The Malaysian Insight reported that the Cabinet has “already decided to implement an emergency amid political instability and the Covid-19 pandemic”.

A source privy to the special cabinet meeting in Putrajaya this morning told the news portal that it “seems like a done deal”.

“They just need to repackage the word ‘emergency’ so that the public won’t panic. They won’t call it ‘darurat’ but will give it a new name. Something for Covid-19,” the source The Malaysian Insight.
